CURRENTS: University Dancers 41st Annual Concert
Description
Directed by Anne Van Gelder
University Dancers celebrates 41 years of engaging dance with our annual concert, CURRENTS, which brings to the University of Richmond the work of innovative guest artists.
Ephrat Asherie has trained her entire life in multiple genres of dance, but identifies the styles of breaking, hip hop, and house dance as her choreographic vocabulary. Asherie's artistic aesthetic utilizes urban social dance as a means to educate and engage community and we are delighted for her to create her second work for the company. First-generation American Nicolo Fonte’s choreographic work features highly developed fusion of ideas, dance, and design, creating synergy with his unique movement language. Prolific contemporary choreographer, Trey McIntyre brings his award-winning choreographic voice to our students for his first guest artist residency. Aligning with the department’s mission, the creative work by Asherie, Fonte, and McIntyre utilizes contemporary dance to educate and engage community.
The concert will also feature new works choreographed by Department of Theatre & Dance faculty Angelica Burgos, Deandra Clarke, Eric Rivera, and Anne Van Gelder. Outstanding adjudicated student choreography will be featured and department faculty members Johann Stegmeir and Maja E. White will design costumes and lighting respectively. Do not miss these talented dancers perform in a variety of contemporary works.
