ENGAGING IN DIALOGUE TO FOSTER CHANGE. The University of Richmond celebrates fostering important and challenging dialogues through the Sharp Viewpoint Speakers Series. This spring, President Kevin F. Hallock will host experts from across the political aisle for a conversation about education, the labor market, and inequality.

UNLOCKING PROSPERITY: EDUCATION, THE LABOR MARKET, AND INEQUALITY

CECILIA E. ROUSE

Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers and Katzman-Ernst Professor in the Economics of Education and Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University

Rouse was confirmed by the Senate on March 2, 2021, as the 30th Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers (C.E.A.), making her the first Black leader of C.E.A. in its 75-year history. In this role, she serves as President Biden’s Chief Economist and a Member of the Cabinet. She is also the Katzman-Ernst Professor in the Economics of Education and Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University. She is a leading scholar of the economics of education and labor markets.

MICHAEL R. STRAIN

Director of Economic Policy Studies and Arthur F. Burns Scholar in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute

Dr. Strain is the author of The American Dream Is Not Dead: (But Populism Could Kill It), which examines longer-term economic outcomes for workers and households. An economist, his research has been published in academic and policy journals, and he has edited or coedited four books on economics and public policy. His work has also appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and National Review, among other publications.

ABOUT THE SHARP VIEWPOINT SPEAKER SERIES

The Sharp Viewpoint Speakers Series is a program of the Office of the President. The series was established in 2011 in honor of Richard L. Sharp, a nationally recognized entrepreneur, to present competing views on topics crucial to our society.

Sharp was an exemplar of personal and professional integrity who served as a mentor to aspiring business and community leaders. Among his many professional roles, he served as president, chief executive officer, and chairman of the board at Circuit City until 2002. Under his leadership, Circuit City developed into one of the nation’s Fortune 500 businesses. He also directed Circuit City’s venture into CarMax, which revolutionized the automotive retail industry, growing it into the nation’s largest retailer of previously owned cars. He retired as chairman of the board in June 2007. He also served as chairman of the board of Crocs, Inc. from 2005 to 2010.

Sharp was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease in late 2010 but continued to demonstrate his values of leading by example, until his death in 2014, by helping shape the landscape of Virginia through his personal philanthropy, and by inspiring and motivating others to give back to their community.
