University Dancers celebrates 33 years of engaging dance with our annual concert, CONVERGE, that brings the work of innovative and talented choreographers Doug Varone, Charlotte Boye-Christensen, Christopher K. Morgan, and Christian von Howard to the University of Richmond. Doug Varone’s award-winning choreography has been called “wonderfully inventive” and “exhilarating.” Salt Lake City-based choreographer Charlotte Boye-Christensen returns to Richmond for her second creation following the success of Unsettled, her 2016 premiere. Boye-Christensen’s collaborative work challenges perceptions of what defines dance, while not rejecting tradition. Hailed for his innovation and ability to tell stories through dance, Christopher K. Morgan premieres his first piece for the company. Christian von Howard, founder and artistic director of the Von Howard Project, returns to Richmond to create his third new work for University Dancers.
The concert also features premiere works choreographed by Alicia Diaz, assistant professor of dance in the Department of Theatre and Dance, whose choreography has been called “bold and subtle” and “stunning in its intricacy and intimacy.” Richmond favorite Starr Foster, Founder/Artistic Director of Starr Foster Dance Project; Eric Rivera, former dancer with Ballet Hispanico; and Anne Van Gelder, University Dancers Artistic Director, will premiere new works as well. Adjudicated student choreography and live music will be featured. Don’t miss these talented dancers in a variety of works from the contemporary genre in a dance concert perfect for the entire family.
